Moxie Fab Camera Craze Challenge

… aka the card that almost killed me.

No, really. This was such a pain in the ass to create.

Well, with my love of all the polaroid and camera crafting goods I’ve seen everywhere, I just had to enter the Moxie Fab Camera Craze Challenge. I mean, it’d have been rude not to.

You know when you get an idea lodged in your brain? And you start to create it, and it’s tough to bring it to life? And then, before you know it, you’re possessed by some crazed stubbornness/bloody mindedness/mania that means you just cannot let it rest – no matter how much you wish you could?

Yup. That.

Camera Craze Challenge indeed.

Anyway…

I’d originally seen my fellow Gallery Idol girl, JJ Bolton, make an awesome Instagram camera card last year (you can check out her post here). I wanted to take this original idea and create something along the same lines, but with my own unique twist on it.

Many many *many* hours of visualising, concepting, thinking-my-way-through-the-design, trial and error… and error… and error… and toil, and labour, and hunger, lack of sleep and crazy crazy hair (my Gallery Idol girls know what I’m talking about here!)… I finally finished up with this:

I know. It doesn’t look much.

But, it contains a secret.

It’s interactive!!

I’d had the idea in my head to make a rotating lens to reveal a sentiment. It’s didn’t come out 100% like I’d planned, but it’s close!

And after 6-7 hours’ worth of effort, it’s close enough.

I started with a Vintage Cream card base and rounded the corners. I punched out a circle of True Black cardstock and cut a slit in it before adhering it to the base with Pinflair Glue Gel. Then I added all the bits that make it look like an Instagram camera – Brown Leather Satchel cardstock top, impressed with the Linen & Canvas Impression plate, Vintage Cream cardstock on the bottom portion, both inked with VintageTouch Tea Dye Duo inks, little strips of Berry Sorbet, Harvest Gold, Hawaiian Shores and Blueberry Sky cardstock, True Black cardstock viewfinder – all that stuff.

The interactive element was created by punching out a Vintage Cream cardstock circle, then trimming it to be smaller (but leaving a little notch in one side), cutting a hole in the centre, then cutting down one side to ‘break’ the circle. I stamped my sentiment from Maya Road’s You’ve Been Framed set using Versafine Onyx Black ink, then pressed the whole thing into my Versamark pad and heat embossed with WOW! Semi Dull Clear embossing powder. You’ll notice just the small circle stamped on my True Black circle too – this was stamped with Vintage Cream ink and heat embossed in the same manner.

Using Scor-Tape I then attached it to some larger circles (again trimmed by hand for the most part) to form a lens. The notch secured the sentiment to the ‘lens’ so that turning the lens would turn the strip.

I fed the strip through the slit on my card and that was the interactive lens done! NB: extremely abridged version of these events).

The little sentiment on the side is from the Just A Love Note stamp set from Simon Says Stamp. I stamped onto Vintage Cream cardstock using a mix of Kraft ink and  SU! Soft Suede ink, and onto Brown Leather Satchel cardstock using Versamark and heat embossing with WOW! Opaque Vanilla White embossing powder. The little leather strap is detachable (as all camera straps are *wink*) and I think that’s about everything!

Here are some action shots of that lens:

I would really love to know what you think of this card. Was all that effort worth it?! I so love getting your comments and feedback, it really makes my day!

Thanks so much for stopping by – see you again soon!

PS: yes I did totally print out a bunch of tiny Instagram polaroids just to use as props for this card! Aren’t they cute?!

  4. OK, now THIS is truly "made with love," as your watermark so aptly declares! Amazing, just flat out amazing! What a great concept to need to turn the lens in order to "focus" on the sentiment. And BRAVO for figuring out how to do just that! Super-fantastic card, and love your commentary too : ) You had me in suspense the whole way!

  5. Wow! that is some serious design work there! Love the idea and love that you were able to execute it!! It is seriously amazing! no, that is an understatement…I don't have any word to describe how awesome this is!!

  7. Holy WOW… so THAT'S what you've done! I can't even wrap my head around these lens, even after reading the description! I SO suck at interactive cards, and to actually invent a mechanism is something that make my brain hurts… lol. Absolutely BRILLIANT!!!

  8. You're a rockstar! Nuff said…

But I'll continue anyway :o) This card is fabulous! I love that even though it took you a ginormous amount of time, you stuck with it and saw it through to the end! This is one that you'll have to keep on display in your crafty space because it is so spectacular! The sentiment coming into focus is pure genius, and I love your polaroid props ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. This is just awesome T! The picture of the card on top of your tablet with all the little instagram pictures all over almost looks real! I love your cleverness and would almost love a stepped out picture tutorial on how you made that camera lens (but only if it doesn't take 6-7 hours to create…in addition to the bad hair). ๐Ÿ™‚
